“I was an extremely shy girl growing up. I was so shy that there would be kids in the classroom that would ask me why I never talked. My social anxiety got the best of me sometimes. There were things that I wanted to do that I couldn’t because I was afraid of what other people would think. I loved to sing. I loved to write. I wanted to perform. I was tired of being given the narrator roles for plays instead of the acting roles as my teachers thought it would be a “better fit for my personality.” These were things I hid from everyone because my fears were too strong.
One day, a little over a year ago, I told myself that I was going to pursue film, something I’ve wanted to do since I was a child. After three film auditions I was offered the lead actress role for a student film. Shortly after, I was offered lead and supporting roles for a variety of film opportunities. It was the best feeling ever knowing that my fears couldn’t hold me back anymore. Then I took a chance on myself and never looked back.” -Ahmi
